Synopsis
1963. Randall Patrick McMurphy – “Mac” – a 38-year-old inmate doing time for numerous assaults and statutory rape has recently been transferred from a work camp affiliated with Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution in Pendleton to a psychiatric institution with a few months left on his sentence. Mac has been able to avoid having to do any work by being “mad” – having a combative and smart-alecky attitude, as well as anti-authoritarian conduct.
He’s in the hospital because Pendleton officials want him to get a mental assessment to verify he’s not insane, believing this is all a ruse to get him out of work. He feels that by doing this, he will be able to avoid having to work for the rest of his term. He is placed in a ward with a group of guys who have varying degrees of mental clarity and control.
He continues to act in the same way to achieve what he wants, using the other patients as either accessories or objects to entertain himself. Miss Mildred Ratched, the ward’s despotic head nurse, whose apparent desire is to crush the spirit of any of the men in her care, is added to his list of ambitions. In the midst of his struggle with Nurse Ratched, Mac strives to give the men a voice while they are in the hospital, and for some of them, when they return to the outside world.
