Bombshell 2019 DVD Cover – Synopsis
The film dramatizes the hostile work climate at Fox News for females at the hands of the network’s President Roger Ailes, focusing on three women – two real life and one fictional (arguably a combination of several real life women) during the early to mid 2016 timeframe.
Megyn Kelly has achieved what many people strive to: she has her own prime time program on the network and has been offered prestigious roles, such as being one of the moderators of the Republican presidential candidates debate. Kelly, unlike most right-wing commentators, decides to challenge candidate Donald Trump about his bad public treatment of women, especially his derogatory name-calling, a behavior that irritates even Trump’s most ardent supporters.

Gretchen Carlson once held Kelly’s place at the network, but her reputation is waning due to a dead on-air time slot, owing to her vocal stance on a variety of topics. In the meantime, she earns Ailes’ wrath for failing to show herself which eye candy, as is the unspoken presumption of all women at the network, whether on-air personalities or not. She recognizes the writing on the wall and takes proactive measures to safeguard her future.
Kayla Pospisil, an outspoken evangelical, has long chosen to work for Fox News and aspires to be a host. She draws Ailes’ attention by taking constructive action to achieve that goal. Carlson is fired as a result of a significant event at the network, prompting her to take the action she had planned: she sues Ailes for sexual assault, despite prior attempts by some to prosecute the network becoming unsuccessful.
Given the widespread fear of female employees who are aware of Ailes’ actions toward them as a group, Kelly and Pospisil must decide whether to go public about their own experiences of Ailes’ inappropriate behavior toward them – Kelly’s ten years ago, Pospisil’s current – at the risk of jeopardizing their careers, which Ailes and the network have not tolerated.
