Honoring his royal father’s dying wish to groom this son as the crown prince, Akeem and Semmi set off to America once again.
Prince Akeem of Zamunda is summoned before his dying father, King Jaffe Joffer, on the 30th anniversary of his marriage to Lisa McDowell.
During his first visit to Queens, New York, Jaffe and his shaman Baba reveal to a befuddled Akeem that he has sired a son after Semmi had enticed two women into spending the night with them while Akeem was still looking for his future queen.
One of them drugged Akeem, resulting in an unremembered tryst; and because Zamundian tradition dictates that only a male successor can inherit the throne, and Lisa has only given birth to daughters, Akeem is forced to return to Queens to retrieve his son, or else face a violent takeover by Zamunda’s militaristic neighbor nation Nextdoria, whose dictator, General Izzi, has tried to push Akeem out
Following King Jaffe’s funeral and Akeem’s coronation, he and Semmi fly to Queens to meet his illegitimate son, Lavelle Junson, and discover him to be a smart-mouthed ticket resaler trying to find work.
Much to his family’s chagrin, Akeem returns to Zamunda with his mother Mary and Lavelle’s uncle Reem after an uncomfortable reunion.
As General Izzi hears of this, he arrives to present his daughter Bopoto to Lavelle in a last-ditch attempt to assume the throne of Zamunda.

However, Lavelle must first pass a series of conventional – and dangerous – exams in order to qualify as a royal prince.
Lavelle is hesitant to put himself in danger at first, but he bonds with Mirembe, a royal groomer, who informs him of Akeem’s search for his queen and urges him to pursue his own path.
Lavelle eventually comes to terms with Akeem’s kin, and with the help of his wits and some coerced bravery, he succeeds in becoming Prince of Zamunda.
However, Lavelle overhears a conversation between Akeem and Izzi at his accession dinner, leading him to conclude that Akeem is simply manipulating him, and he, Mirembe, Mary, and Reem return to New York.
Lisa locks Akeem out of their bedroom after she loses Mary, whom she has befriended. Akeem flies back to the States after a talk with her father, who reminds him of late Queen Aoleon’s revolutionary spirit, leaving Semmi to stall Izzi, who plans to return in one day to either see Bopoto wed Lavelle or declare war.
When Akeem returns to Queens, he discovers that Lavelle and Mirembe are about to marry. He sends them his blessing and releases Lavelle from his royal duties, recalling his own life story.
Meanwhile, General Izzi is fought off and subdued by Semmi and the princesses, prompting him to try a more diplomatic solution.
When Akeem returns home, he breaks the royal succession tradition by allowing Meeka to succeed to the throne in the event of his death, while Lavelle is appointed as Zamunda’s ambassador to New York, and General Izzi establishes Nextdoria as a stable political and trade partnership.
The film concludes with a lavish party at the royal palace, with special guests including Akeem’s Queens friends.
